Why are we here?
Examining what it means to be a church

In our home, we live with three domestic cats. Among them is a small female named, Pepper, whom I affectionately nicknamed, Little Kitty. She is a full grown adult cat, but is noticeably smaller than her sister and our resident male cat. She is so light that when she hops up on my lap, I barely feel her weight. Yet her small size in no way diminishes her identity as a cat. Are there larger cats in the world? Of course, but that fact does not make her any less a full member of the feline kind. This is especially true when it comes to daily snack time when she makes up for her small physical size with a very vocal presence.

Over the almost four decades of our existence as a church, we have never been anything but a small church. We've

Many people have looked with surprise and distain at our small size and in effect said, "You can't be a successful church because you are so small and meet in a building that doesn't look like a church." As if they are telling us something we don't already know. In a way, they are right: all we have is God, His Word, and a love for all people, expressed in an undying effort all these years to faithfully proclaim the whole council of God, especially the good news that all people can be reconciled to God through faith in His Son, Jesus Christ. This is not to say we are Bible study; we are not. We practice biblical church government, have a constitution, have a physical location where we meet regularly, and partner with faithful external mission organizations to attempt to reach as far as possible in the world with this message of salvation in Jesus Christ. We are small, but we have a big God Who uses the ordinary to accomplish the extraordinary. We are not the "big tiger" church down the street, but more like my Little Kitty who is just as much a cat as the big tigers.
